Dry Cold weather to abate as rains/snow predicted in first week of January

Since the beginning of December, almost all parts of Pakistan have experienced dry and cold weather. This dry weather has resulted in smoggy weather in some parts of the plains, while icy weather conditions in northern areas are creating seasonal sicknesses to peak. This dry but cold weather is not conducive for rabi crops as water stress conditions are likely in rain-fed areas of Potohar and KPK.

The cold wave is quite severe in Western Balochistan where many areas are seeing below-freezing temperatures and in Ziarat, mercury dips as low as -7C. On the other hand, in northern areas of Pakistan minimum temperatures are settling as low as 10 degrees below freezing temperature. For example, in Skardu, the -13C temperature was observed when the cold wave hit its peak during mid-December.

Like other areas of the country, the capital territory of Islamabad also experiencing cold wave-like weather conditions since 10th December. Widespread ground frost is observed in Islamabad and Potohar region as the temperature hits as low as -01C during morning hours.

However, the current dry weather is likely to abate from the first week of January 2025 as moderate to strong western disturbance is likely to affect most parts of upper areas and some southern parts of Pakistan. This will result in the first spell of moderate rains and heavy snow over mountainous areas of the north. We will update you in detail regarding the upcoming WD as the prediction matures.
